Yura Yura Teikoku are gods!
Yura Yura Teikoku played at the Wilbur Theater in Boston last Wednesday (9/16/09) and, as anticipated, they blew the roof off the venue. Inexplicably, the band doesn't receive much recognition in America despite the reported difficulty in obtaining tickets to their shows in Japan. Nevertheless, they undeniably rocked the stage last night and, in my opinion, completely overshadowed the headliner. Yura Yura, a psych/punk/rock band of the highest caliber, with lots of reverb and echoes, displays supreme artistry and a keen sense of melody. Comparing them to somewhat known Western acts is a challenge - perhaps envision a serious-minded, edgier Phish or a psychedelic Rage Against the Machine. Their live performance might not reveal it, but their albums feature well-arranged, more subdued tracks. However, on stage, they deliver an incredibly powerful and brilliant sound.
They performed approximately ten songs as the audience trickled in. By the end of the last song, the venue was about 75% full. The crowd gave them a great reception, and I heard they were staying for a signing session after the show. I regretted leaving after just three Yo La Tango songs; I wish I could have stayed longer to experience more of Yura Yura Teikoku's electrifying performance.
